Exciting Wedding Trends for 2024

Every year is different in the world. I mean, compare 1960 to now or even 2019 to 2020. Things change and it’s always fun to see what’s new. Wedding trends for 2024 are shaping up to be a blend of traditional and modern elements, catering to the diverse preferences of couples tying the knot. While classic white weddings will always remain popular, expect to see a rise in non-traditional venues such as art galleries, warehouses, and even backyard settings. Sustainability is also a key focus, with couples opting for eco-friendly options like biodegradable confetti, recycled paper invitations, and locally sourced flowers. Technology will continue to play a significant role in wedding planning, from virtual reality venue tours to live-streaming ceremonies for guests unable to attend in person. In terms of fashion, vibrant and unconventional color choices are expected to make a splash, with brides and grooms embracing non-traditional hues for their attire. Also, personalized and unique elements are becoming increasingly important, as couples seek to add meaningful touches that reflect their individuality and love story. Overall, the wedding trends for 2024 are characterized by a desire for sustainability, technology integration, and personalization, offering couples a wide range of options to make their special day truly memorable.

Smaller, Less Involved Weddings

Since Covid, many more people have jumped on the smaller weddings. Back then, it was all people could do, but many realized that smaller, less stress weddings can be great.  Couples are opting for smaller guest lists and more personal, meaningful experiences. This can include small gatherings in picturesque outdoor locations, cozy backyard receptions, or micro-weddings in unique venues. The focus is on creating a relaxed and intimate atmosphere, where the couple can truly connect with their closest family and friends. It gives everyone a chance to really connect and can also save a large amount of money.

More Outfit Changes

Last year, I had one bride that had three different wedding dresses and it was wonderful. In 2024, more brides and grooms will be making changes from the ceremony outfit to the reception. While the traditional white wedding gown will always be a classic choice, brides are opting for multiple dresses to showcase different styles and personalities. From a whimsical and romantic ceremony gown to a sleek and sophisticated reception dress, brides are embracing the chance to express themselves through their wardrobe. Grooms are also getting in on the trend, choosing to change into a different suit or tuxedo for various parts of the day. This allows them to keep things fresh and exciting, while also making a stylish statement. Another benefit of more outfit changes is the additional opportunities for stunning photos, capturing the couple in different looks and settings. It’s also great for comfort. Certain outfits are going to be a lot easier for partying and being on the dance floor.

The Guest is Best

The couple should always be the main focus on the wedding, but it’s also very much about the friends and family and their experience.  Couples are moving away from the traditional focus solely on the bride and groom and are placing more importance on creating a memorable and enjoyable experience for their guests. This means providing interactive and immersive experiences, such as live entertainment, interactive food stations, and unique photo opportunities. Couples are also paying more attention to the comfort and convenience of their guests, with many choosing to have indoor ceremonies and receptions to ensure guests are not affected by weather conditions. In terms of aesthetics, the focus is on creating Instagram-worthy moments, with couples opting for unique backdrops and decor that will make for stunning photos. If your favorite people don’t enjoy the wedding, then what’s the point?

Keep the Night Going with After Parties

For those that aren’t creating a smaller wedding, many will choose to keep things going with an after party. These after parties will be more extravagant than ever, with couples looking to offer their guests an unforgettable experience long after the main reception has ended. Expect to see after parties with all the bells and whistles, from top-notch entertainment such as live bands or celebrity DJs to late-night food trucks and extravagant open bars. Couples are also getting creative with after party themes, from black-tie cocktail affairs to casual beach bonfires. This trend is a reflection of couples wanting to extend the celebration and create lasting memories for their guests. It’s also a way for them to let loose and have fun in a more relaxed environment after the formalities of the main event. Most guests and venues are done by 10, so this is a great way to take the party somewhere else with the people that still want to have a good time.

Options for the Non-Drinkers

Weddings are known for alcohol, and while it does make things lively, not everyone drinks. This often meant that non-drinkers were left with a few choices like soda or water. That’s not much fun! Couples are increasingly looking for unique and sophisticated non-alcoholic options to offer their guests, such as artisanal mocktails, alcohol-free spirits, and specialty craft sodas. These non-alcoholic beverages are being given just as much attention and creativity as the traditional cocktail menu, with ingredients like fresh herbs, house-made syrups, and exotic fruit infusions. The shift towards non-boozy beverages is in line with the growing wellness movement and the desire for more inclusive and diverse options for wedding celebrations. Offering a variety of non-alcoholic drinks can cater to guests who do not consume alcohol for personal, health, or religious reasons, ensuring that everyone feels welcome and accommodated at the wedding.

Entertaining Food

One of the most entertaining ways to eat is with a hibachi grill. I love all the theatrics and the fire. Now, many couples are bringing this type of cooking to their weddings. These interactive food stations not only add an element of excitement to the reception, but also provide a unique and memorable dining experience for the guests. From sizzling fajitas to flaming desserts, these stations will feature dishes that are cooked or finished with fire, adding a touch of drama to the dining experience. Couples are opting for live cooking and flambe presentations to create a visually stunning and engaging atmosphere. In addition to the culinary entertainment, these stations will also showcase a diverse range of global flavors and ingredients, allowing guests to indulge in a variety of spicy, smoky, and charred dishes. To complement the fiery culinary stations, wedding planners are including fire pits and torches to create a warm and inviting ambiance.

Wedding Content Creators

Social media is huge. Everyone knows that and it’s not going away. A new trend is to hire a content creator to capture all of the things for your wedding. Now, these are different that the normal photographers and videographers. Their main goal is to create content for social media vs. capturing everything that a photographer would. The good side is that they can quickly create things for social media without the hassle of going through 1000’s of photos.

I have mixed feelings on the use of content creators, and I’ll probably create a whole blog post just for that.

Late Night Snack

I love to snack. I tend to get hungry every night around 8 or 9. Many of your wedding guests are going to feel the same way.  Most of the food is gone early in the reception, so it’s a great idea to provide a snack later in the night. From gourmet food trucks to interactive food stations, the emphasis is on providing guests with an unexpected and memorable culinary experience. Some popular late-night bite ideas include customizable mini sliders, build-your-own taco bars, and made-to-order gourmet grilled cheese stations. Couples are also incorporating unexpected sweet treats such as cotton candy carts, nitrogen ice cream bars, or boozy milkshake stations.

Bringing Back the Hits

I’m old enough now to see things from my childhood come back and be popular again. Couples are doing the same thing and turning to the past for inspiration, from 1920s art deco glamour to 1970s bohemian vibes. Vintage dresses with intricate lace and beading are making a comeback, as well as retro hair and makeup styles. Brides are opting for birdcage veils and statement headpieces, while grooms are embracing classic tuxedos and three-piece suits. The color palettes are also reflecting this vintage revival, with rich jewel tones and muted earthy hues taking center stage. In terms of decor, antique furniture and mismatched china are adding a touch of nostalgia to the celebrations. Vinyl records and classic cocktails are being incorporated into the entertainment and beverage offerings, adding a sense of old-school charm to the festivities. The return of retro is not only a nod to the past, but also a way for couples to infuse their weddings with a sense of timeless elegance and romance.

Drone Photography

Lately, I’ve been seeing some photos take from really interesting perspectives. It’s often way up above things, and the only way I know to do this is with a drone. With couples seeking unique and creative ways to capture their special day, drone photography offers a fresh perspective and stunning aerial shots that traditional photography simply can’t provide. From breathtaking overhead views of the ceremony to dynamic shots of the couple against picturesque backdrops, drone photography adds an element of excitement and grandeur to the wedding album. As technology continues to advance, drones are becoming more accessible and affordable, making it easier for couples to incorporate this trend into their wedding plans.

Now, I will say it is important to follow the law with drones. The usually means that the operator has a license. Another huge rule is to not fly over people. If the drone crashed, it could really hurt someone. Follow all the rules and you’ll get some amazing shots.

Secrets and Surprises

Almost everyone loves a surprise. Couples are jumping on that with secrete drinks and big surprises.  These exclusive drink options are not revealed until guests arrive at the bar, adding an element of mystery and excitement to the celebration. Late night surprises are becoming popular among couples who want to keep the party going into the early hours. Whether it’s a surprise performance by a live band, a firework display, or a food truck arrival, these unexpected moments create a sense of spontaneity and thrill for the guests.

Audio Guest Books

As the wedding industry continues to evolve, audio guest books are predicted to be a popular trend for 2024 weddings. Couples are looking for unique ways to capture memories and create a more personalized experience for their guests. Audio guest books allow family and friends to leave recorded messages for the newlyweds, providing a more intimate and heartfelt keepsake than a traditional written guest book. This trend is also in line with the growing popularity of digital and interactive wedding elements.

I love this idea! I’ve been stressing the importance of voice for years, and that’s one of the big draws for wedding videography. The audio guest books captures your friends’ and family’s voices and allows you to remember them.

Favors that Last

I love the ideas of different and unique wedding favors. Many of them though, don’t last like candy. Now, couples are looking at wedding favors that last.  Couples are now choosing gifts like potted plants, succulents, or personalized keepsakes that guests can cherish for years to come. These permanent favors not only serve as a thoughtful token of appreciation for attending the wedding, but they also represent a meaningful choice. It will be so much nicer to have something that you can look at for years versus something that is gone in a few weeks.

The Private Last Dance

First dances have been in weddings for such a long time, and it also makes sense to do a last dance. This is usually a private dance between the couple to wrap up the night. It allows them time to focus on each other one more time before the night is over. This is also used as a time to to prep for the exit, so while they are dancing, everyone is getting into place.

Unique Exits

Wedding exits are so much fun! It’s a time to wrap up the night with one last hurrah. Sparklers have been the most popular for years, but now, couples are looking for unique and memorable ways to cap off their special day. From vintage cars and motorcycles to hot air balloon rides and fireworks displays, the options for unforgettable exits are endless. Making it match the couple’s personality is also a great way to make it even better.

Wedding Newspapers

One emerging trend is the rise of wedding newspapers, serving as a unique and personalized way for couples to share their love story with friends and family. It’s funny, but a large amount of guests will not have any real experience with newspaper. It will be a fun and retro way to learn about the couple. These customized newspapers can include articles about how the couple met, their engagement story, and fun facts about the bride and groom. Furthermore, they can also feature photos of the couple, the bridal party, and special moments from the wedding planning process. Wedding newspapers not only provide a creative way to engage guests, but they also serve as a cherished keepsake for the couple to look back on for years to come.

Unique Live Entertainment Ideas

With the wedding industry constantly evolving, couples are always on the lookout for unique and memorable live entertainment ideas to wow their guests. In 2024, we can expect to see a rise in unconventional entertainment options such as aerialists, fire dancers, and acrobats performing during the reception. These visually stunning performances are sure to captivate the audience and create a truly unforgettable experience. Interactive entertainment such as virtual reality gaming stations and photo booths with augmented reality features will continue to gain popularity, allowing guests to immerse themselves in the festivities in new and exciting ways.  Surprise entertainment acts that are seamlessly woven into the wedding timeline, such as flash mobs or surprise celebrity performances, are sure to leave a lasting impression on guests.

A Wedding with a Smell in a good way

I’m not a huge one for scents, but I know many brides are. One of the emerging trends  is the incorporation of scenting into the wedding experience. Couples are seeking to create a multi-sensory experience for their guests, and scenting is an effective way to achieve this. From scented floral arrangements to signature wedding fragrances, couples are embracing the idea of using scent to set the tone for their special day. Scented candles, diffusers, and even aromatic mists are being used to create a pleasant ambiance and enhance the overall atmosphere of the wedding.

Ribbons & Bows

Looking ahead to 2024 wedding trends, ribbons and bows are expected to be big in the world of wedding decorations. These classic and timeless elements are making a comeback as couples look for ways to add an elegant and romantic touch to their special day. From oversized bows adorning the backs of chairs to delicate ribbon details on wedding invitations, ribbons and bows can be incorporated in a variety of ways to elevate the overall aesthetic of the wedding.  Whether it’s using silk ribbons to tie around bouquets or opting for lush velvet bows on table settings, the possibilities are endless when it comes to incorporating ribbons and bows into the wedding decor.

Disposable Cameras

Couples are choosing disposable cameras as a nostalgic and fun way to capture candid moments from their big day. Disposable cameras are a great way to involve wedding guests in the photography process, giving them the opportunity to capture special moments from their perspective. Yes, everyone has a cell phone, but these give everyone the excitement of using a real camera. The other fun twist is the couple can get all of the prints made later to see what all was captured. Some couples even provide disposable cameras as wedding favors, encouraging guests to take their own snapshots throughout the day.

Interactive Seating Charts

Instead of the traditional paper seating plan, couples are going with digital displays or interactive touch screens that allow guests to easily find their assigned table. This modern approach not only adds a high-tech element to the wedding but also adds a fun and engaging experience for guests as they navigate through the seating arrangement. Interactive seating charts can also be customized to match the theme or aesthetic of the wedding, adding a personalized touch to the overall design. This technology allows for easy changes or updates to seating arrangements, which can be helpful for any last-minute adjustments.

Big Hopes for 2024

The wedding industry in 2024 is set to see some intriguing trends that reflect the ever-changing nature of weddings.  Technology and virtual elements will continue to play a big role, and couples will continue to try to make it a unique experience for their guests. I’m very excited to see what all of the couples come up with while celebrating their love on their wedding day.
