Inspiration can be found everywhere. Some people find it in the smallest things, and others try to reproduce something much bigger. Recently I’ve started a new way of finding ideas for wedding photography: fashion magazines.
Finding Ideas for Wedding Photography
This really isn’t a new idea. I’m sure photographers all over the world have been doing this for a long time, but it’s a new thing for me. I got this idea from watching a CreativeLive video by Bret Florens. He’s kind of a big deal. He shoots weddings for at least 10 grand. He said he finds a lot of his inspiration from the fashion world, either from magazines or online.
Now, I don’t know if I would really call my style high fashion, but I do like that kind of look. I’m more into making things look beautiful than creating funny photos like other photographers. I also don’t plan on making any big shifts in how I’m doing things. I just plan on looking through the magazines and finding poses or lighting or just an interesting concept.
A secondary plus to looking through these magazines is I might learn some things as well. I want to be a stylish guy, but honestly I’m slacking in that area. Maybe by looking at these magazines I’ll have it magically transmitted into my brain. It’s also good to see what is popular as far as clothing and what is in. I’m looking to move toward the upper level client, and I think it’s important to know what they are in to.
Currently, I’m getting Vogue, Harper’s Bazaar, and Esquire. I was thinking Esquire might have more men’s style for me, but so far I haven’t found much use for it. In the future I might replace it with something else.
I hope these magazines are of use. I believe I got each subscription for around $15, so if I get one or two things from it, it will be worth it. I’m sure there are other ways of finding ideas for wedding photography, but I like the idea of just sitting on a couch and flipping through a magazine. Try it; it’s relaxing.
