Under the Woods Wedding

Hiring Wedding Vendors from Outside Your City

Two weeks ago, I traveled to Kansas City for a wedding. I drove down the night before because it would too difficult to drive the morning of and then shoot all day. I ended up staying Sunday as well and doing two engagement sessions. Anyway, I’ll be traveling a lot this year and next, so I thought I’d talk about hiring wedding vendors from outside your city.

Hiring Wedding Vendors from Outside Your city

I guess the first thing to do is clarify what I mean by outside your city. I really mean a larger area than that. If someone is in the city next to you, that’s not a big deal. I really am talking about someone having to travel to your wedding a decent distant. This can vary from person to person, but I would say anything over 2 hours or if they have to spend the night.

Pros of Hiring Wedding Vendors outside your City

1. More Options

Life used to be quite different back in the day before the internet and Amazon. I know that makes me sound super old, but it’s true. Back then, you were limited to what you could find in your city. For example, if you wanted a toothbrush, you would have to take what you could find at Walmart or another store.

Today, things are much different. If you want a toothbrush, you have hundreds of options, from all over the world. This way, you can find the perfect toothbrush.

The same applies to your wedding. If you only look right around your city, you are limited on your options. If you expand your search to outside your city, you now have so many more options!

I don’t think you should have to settle for your wedding. I think you should find wedding vendors that can do exactly what you want. If you can’t find someone in your city, look further.

2. Save Money

This is not always the case, but you could save money by looking outside your city. First off, you might be working on a budget, and you can’t find someone you like in your city within your budget. I bet you can find someone if you outside of your area.

A lot of this has to do with the cost of living. It is different from city to city, and that means photographers will need to charge more in cities with a higher cost of living. The opposite is true. Photographers living elsewhere can charge less. This means if your wedding is in a big city, you could find a photographer or dj or whatever that charges less in a smaller city.

3. Show Off Status

This isn’t something I really believe in, but this could be a way to show off or seem important. Just like people want to wear certain brands, people might want to have a fancy or highly known person work their wedding. Imagine telling everyone you flew in a top ranked chef from New York for your wedding.

Cons of Hiring Wedding Vendors Outside Your City

1. Not Supporting Local Business

Lately, there has been a big push to support local and small businesses. It makes sense. These are the people that live around you and the money from taxes will go back to help your city. If you hire someone from outside your city, that money will be going elsewhere.

2. Harder to Make a Decision

Have you ever been at a restaurant and struggled to pick something because there were too many options? That’s actually very common. The more options you have, the harder it is to make a decision.

In the end, people will often doubt their decision as well. They might keep thinking about the other options and what could have been. This leads to them not being happy with their decision no matter if it was the right one or not.

3. Distance

The distance is the biggest con of hiring outside vendors. First off, you can’t easily meet in person. Yes, you can do Zoom calls and that does help, but there are some things that need to be done in person. For example, you can’t taste cake or try on a dress through Zoom. You need to be there.

Second, you will most likely have to pay for travel and stay. It might only be a few hundred dollars, but it is something to consider.

Third, things happen when people travel. Cars breakdown, flights are delayed. This is a big risk considering you need them there on a certain day and at a certain time.

4. They won’t know the area

There’s something nice about being familiar with an area. You know what to expect and what to do. When a wedding vendor has to travel, they won’t be as familiar with the area. They won’t know all the directions, where to park, how things work, or the other vendors involved.

Should You Hire Only in Your City?

Unfortunately, I can’t tell you what to do in this situation. I would suggest you start by looking in your city and the surrounding area. If you can’t find someone there, then expand your search. Don’t do this for every single wedding vendor. Only focus on the things that really matter to you. Also, there are some wedding vendors that can’t travel too far. Things like wedding cakes and flowers can only go so far. In the end, the most important thing is you find the right wedding vendors for your wedding, whether that’s in your city or some place else.
