I’ve been writing on this blog for about 8 years now, and I’ve shared all types of things from my wedding shoots to just random events. I don’t think I’ve ever really talked about individual photos though. Out of every wedding, there is usually one photo that stands out from the rest and everyone loves. People will often ask me about it, but I’ve never really shared these stories on here. So, with that said, I’m going to start telling the stories of some of my favorite photos and how I got the shot.
How I got the shot- Kala and Braden at Whitney Mountain Lodge
These “How I got the Shot” posts will be more than the technical camera info. Yes, I will still give information about lenses and flashes and all of that stuff because other photographers like it, but I’m going to spend a lot of time telling the story of the photo. What was the situation? Who were the people? What made it special? All of that stuff. I think that’s what makes the behind the scenes so interesting.
We’re starting off with a photo from several years ago. Kala and Braden got married at Whitney Mountain Lodge and it was a fun and interesting day. Plenty of crazy things went on like one of my cameras breaking, but my favorite story from the day was with Kala. Whitney Mountain Lodge has an amazing view and people will drive up just to see it. Well, we were doing photos with Kala when some old people decided to interrupt so they could see the view. Kala, being the awesome person she is, flips them off as they leave. I laughed so hard, and yes, I did take a photo of it.
So, these two were really outgoing and up for about anything, which is what we needed to get this shot. There was this fence that was keeping us away from the view, and it makes sense because you could easily fall and die. Well, Kala and Braden were very willing to hop the fence and get a photo with the view. Plenty of people would have said no and missed out, but they jumped right in.
As far as the technical side goes, I was using a Nikon 24-70mm and we had a flash shooting through a white umbrella to light them. It was a little later in the evening, so we didn’t need a ton of power.
I love this photo and this couple is amazing. If you want to see more of their photos, check out the full blog post. I’ll be seeing them again in a few weeks to take photos of their family, and I can’t wait. They always make me laugh. I hope this was entertaining, and be on the lookout for more, “how I got the shot” articles in the future.
