I’ve been shooting weddings for around 8 years now, and I’ve been using Lightroom for a few years. Today as I was driving to a meeting I had ta-da moment. I had been going through photos from the past year and looking for certain things, and it was a struggle to remember things, and I was wasting a lot of time. I suddenly realized that if I had been marking photos with keywords in Lightroom, this whole process would have been much faster and easier. So I’m here saying it now, using Lightroom Keyword tags for wedding photographers is a smart idea.
Using Lightroom Keyword tags for Wedding Photographers
Ok, I know a ton of you photographers out there are saying my ta-da moment was really a duh moment, and I agree with you. Using keywords is a very common thing for photographers to do. I actually should have been doing it years ago. So, I’ll try to explain my thought process and why I have never done this before.
As I’ve mentioned several times before, I use to be a teacher as well as a photographer and this is my first year going full time. That meant, in the past, I was very short on time. My main focus was always getting photos edited and back to my clients. Putting keywords in was just another task that would take up time. Honestly, before I never saw the purpose in using keywords. Now, though, I’m seeing some really good reasons to start using keywords.
At some point, I’m going to do a whole post dedicated to how keywords can be useful, but I’ll give a few insights I had. One, when you shoot a lot of weddings you tend to forget things about each wedding. Was that wedding at that venue or that church? Who was it again that had a dog as the ring bearer? I know I forgot things all the time, so this would help with my memory issues. Two, there are a lot of people involved in weddings, and I can’t remember who I’ve worked with. This would help me find photos for certain vendors.
Wedding photographers, if you’re silly like me and not using keywords in Lightroom, you need to start right now. I’m actually about to go back through all of 2016 and add keywords to all my weddings. In the future, Using Lightroom Keyword tags for Wedding Photographers is going to be built into my workflow, so I won’t have to ever deal with this again.
